High Velocity Hurricane Zone (HVHZ) Requirements

What is the High Velocity Hurricane Zone?

The High Velocity Hurricane Zone (HVHZ) is the most stringent hurricane protection area in the United States. Established after Hurricane Andrew in 1992, the HVHZ encompasses Miami-Dade County and requires all exterior openings — windows, doors, and garage doors — to meet large missile impact resistance standards. Products must withstand wind speeds of 130+ mph and resist impact from a 9-pound 2x4 lumber projectile traveling at 50 feet per second.

All impact windows and doors installed in Miami-Dade County must carry Miami-Dade County Notice of Acceptance (NOA) approval, the gold standard for hurricane protection products. This means every product we install has been independently tested and certified to meet the highest impact resistance standards in the nation.

Miami-Dade County Building Code Requirements

  • Large Missile Impact rated windows and doors (Miami-Dade NOA)
  • Wind load resistance minimum 130+ mph design pressure
  • 9 lb 2x4 projectile impact test at 50 fps (34 mph)
  • Laminated glass with PVB interlayer (min 0.090 inch)
  • Reinforced aluminum, vinyl, or fiberglass frames
  • Multi-point locking systems on all exterior doors
  • Permit required for all window and door replacements
  • Miami-Dade County building department
